As part of an existing complex of community buildings, the project brief called for the expansion of the local hospital to include a new overnight facility, maternity and trauma ward, as well as the renovation of the clinic to include a new pharmacy and treatment rooms. In addition, a new building was proposed for emergencies.

Conceptually, the buildings were arranged around a central courtyard with a canteen and dining area at its heart. Where possible, the buildings also included a small internal courtyard which connects to a covered walkway that runs along the perimeter of the larger courtyard. As a locally available material, bricks are used throughout to adapt the traditional design of Kibaale’s community and the natural, powerful look of Uganda.
