Celebrating Sacred Space: X’s Transformative Church Addition in Costa Rica
The relationship between architecture and religion has historically resulted in some of our most sacred spaces. From dances around a ceremonial fire, to great Gothic cathedrals, our sacred spaces have served as a medium through which spirituality could be experienced through shared community. The design and expression of these places plays a crucial role in shaping the way we connect with the divine, serving as a focal point for worship and spiritual experience.
As architects, the design of a sacred space is arguably one of the most complex and exciting building types to explore: They celebrate life, love, and community, providing platforms for praise through song, dance and expression. They are also innately spiritual, quiet and serve as a space of reverence for the divine.
Despite this, many modern churches and community buildings lack the deeper spiritual qualities necessary to inspire and uplift. Too often, we see these spaces housed in simple, shed-like structures that are sterile and cold. As architects, our role in undertaking the design and function of these spaces must strive to balance these complex characteristics.
Over the past few years, X Architecture has been fortunate to have engaged in several projects that aim to build and uplift local community buildings in creative, thoughtful ways. One such project involves a significant addition to a local church in Costa Rica.
The new design features a large covered courtyard, creating a versatile space for gatherings and events. Inspired by traditional churches, the design includes a strong axis flanked by colonnades of flying buttresses, leading to the main church. The refreshed interior offers an elegant setting with a new altar and podium, perfect for special ceremonies. Proportion and scale were meticulously considered, with the new facade framing the sanctuary with a strong vertical axis.
The lower level includes an updated gymnasium and multipurpose space designed for children, offering a safe area for play, after-school activities, workshops, and support groups. These rooms provide quiet, private spaces for various community needs.
Throughout the design, careful attention was given to light and space to emphasise moments of engagement and reflection. The extension balances sacred and functional space, enhancing both personal and collective spiritual experiences.
This project exemplifies how architecture can be a conduit for transcendence, shaping our lives and understanding of the divine. While addressing the need for more room for a growing congregation, we aimed to reinvent the church to better embody sacred space and community.
We are excited about the positive impact this project will have and invite you to stay tuned for updates as our vision comes to fruition. The sacred spaces we create today will continue to shape spiritual experiences and community connections for generations to come.
